Out of the entire area protected under the category of ˝Significant Landscape˝ with a total area of 5.19 km2, Barać Caves are definitely the most famous attraction. These caves, after which the entire protected area was named, were first opened for visitors way back in 1892. Valuation of the area determined that the area of the Significant Landscape of Barać Caves featured various types and forms of relief, with karst relief being predominant. Under ground, there are cave structures with stalagmites and stalactites, Pleistocene fossilised remains and endemic cave fauna and archaeological finds. The entire area also includes rare and endangered habitat types and the endangered and strictly protected species that are related to them.

With its exceptional natural beauty, this area has always attracted nature lovers, and already on 8 April 1949, it was proclaimed Croatia’s first national park. The process of tufa formation, which results in the building of the tufa, or travertine, barriers and resulted in the creation of the lakes, is the outstanding universal value, for which the Plitvice Lakes were internationally recognised on 26 October 1979 with their inscription onto the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Nacional park Paklenica

79 km – 1h 14 min

Due to its unique natural features, magnificent forests and extraordinary geomorphologic structures, the area of Velika and Mala Paklenica was proclaimed a national park in 1949. The main reason for proclaiming this area a national park was the protection of the largest and best preserved forest complex in the territory of Dalmatia, which was threatened by overexploitation. The Paklenica National Park stretches on the area of 95 km2, and includes the highest peaks of the Velebit Mountain – Vaganski vrh (1752 m a.s.l.) and Sveto brdo (1753 m a.s.l.).

It covers the area of torrent flows of Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica, and their distinctive canyons carved vertically into the south slopes of Velebit.

Including the submerged part of the river at the mouth, the Krka River is 72.5 km long, making it the 22nd longest river in Croatia. It springs in the foothills of the Dinara mountain range, 2.5 km northeast of Knin. With its seven waterfalls and a total drop in altitude of 242 m, the Krka is a natural and karst phenomenon. Beautiful place and more beautiful animals … bears are wonderful … if you are passing throug definitely stop and visit. You can help the volunteers to make life easier for these wonderful animals.
It is a way to drive, in the middle of the country side. But, worth a visit. These people, all volunteers, help these orphanaged brown bears live a decent life. There are some 800-1000 brown bears left in Croatia. None die a natural death. All human. And Croatia gives out licences to hunt upto 120 bears a year. More that 10% of the total bear population!
This organisation needs our attention and our support. And it is lovely to see these gorgeous, peaceful bears.
